Often, a website is the window into a company’s brand. In the case of tourism, a website is the window into the heart of an entire community. The Dubois County Visitors Center and Tourism Commission asked us to completely revamp their website, both desktop and mobile, to function as their primary tool for access and information for county recreational, leisure, and business travel. The project required us to retain their existing brand logo and image library, and we focused on styling the site to reflect Dubois County’s unique social, cultural, educational, and economic character. Our greatest challenge was developing a feature set to encourage users to explore and discover new content—turning website visitors into actual Dubois County visitors. We achieved this with a straight-forward navigation bar, an interactive map, a ‘Favorite Things To Do’ list, a ‘My Itinerary’ Planner, and a topically generated ‘Additional Info’ tag system.
The primary navigation bar uses drop down menus offering quick links to attractions and events, accommodations, and planning. The interactive map helps users explore with a geographic overhead illustration of Dubois County, marking places of interest with roll-over icons for detailed information. ‘Favorite Things To Do’ is a frequently updated list that highlights noteworthy attractions and upcoming events in the area. ‘My Itinerary’ works like a shopping cart on an e-commerce site allowing web users to create and print a master travel itinerary by simply drag-and-dropping preferred trip highlights into one online spot. For further discovery, every post contains ‘Additional Info’, a list of categorized tags, to allow users to easily navigate topics of related interest. Our client is most impressed with the simple CMS system we created, easily facilitating daily updates for a continually refreshed website, a must for Dubois County’s tourism, and sustainability, needs.
